Trentham Bowling Club 2021 Season Report

In spite of Covid and the restrictions it has imposed on people meeting, the bowls club has had a good year. Over the first part of the year a lot of time was spent upgrading the club house and grounds. We were able to start playing again in June.  Our Membership at the end of the year consisted of:

58Male Members
29Lady Members
3Youth Members
13Associate Members
3Trustees
106Total Members

We played over 40 friendly matches, both home and away, competed in 2 Men’s Berkshire Leagues, winning both the Kennet League (KL) Division 2 West, and the Kennet League over 55 (KLV) Division 3 Central West. Meanwhile our Ladies competed in the Thames Valley Ladies League Division 3 and finished as runners up.  We also carried out numerous and varied in-house matches, competitions and ‘Fun’’ events as well as our annual Championships.

Trentham were also proud to host the County game between Berkshire and Oxfordshire this year, as well as a celebratory game versus a Berkshire Select team to celebrate the delayed 60th Anniversary of our Affiliation (1961).

We also conducted our Annual Tour, later than normal, where we played four games against clubs around the Ilfracombe area, and we hosted, at Trentham, a touring Club from Rugby.

As well as playing outdoors (season runs from mid-April to mid-September) we have played short mat over the winter months, in our Clubhouse, and played Short Mat friendly games against Tilehurst. as well as enjoying Member social events.

We have our own excellent green keepers who work hard to keep the playing surface in good condition, and both greens have been maintained at a high standard throughout the season, and proved to be an excellent playing surface.

The top green, where there are 2 rinks, is available for local residents to use on a Saturday morning when a coach is available, or if they wish to play at another time contact should be made with an official of the club.  We have 2 qualified coaches to help you.

Sadly however, we have to report the death of Mr John Carr, who has been a Trustee of the Club from the start of the present 40-year lease in 1993.  John took a very active interest in the Club throughout his life despite suffering from health problems and having to use a wheelchair in later life. John will be missed by the Club and we are actively seeking a permanent replacement as Trustee, with Mr Michael Lear currently standing in temporarily.

Trentham remains a very active local Bowling Club, with a solid membership, and we are very much looking forward to the 2022 outdoor season and the other planned activities this year.  Our ambitions for this next year include trying to recruit more Junior members, attracting more members, carrying out further improvements to the Club facilities, improve our overall standards of play and also to try and encourage more County and top-class games whenever we are able.

We welcome anyone to join us, age and ability do not limit you! All club details, including contacts, matches, competitions, results and social events can be found here, on our regularly updated website.

I think that’s all for now!  Thanks for doing all this.

Regards

Rick

Trentham Bowls 2020 Autumn Newsletter

Dear Member,

Please find attached a copy of Trentham’s 2020 Autumn Newsletter.  This newsletter is sent to all registered members, normally by email but if  you do not have an email address registered with the Club I can post a copy to you, it will also be displayed in the Club House and on the Website.  If you are having difficulties opening and reading the attached PDF file, please let me know and I can send you a JPG (picture) instead.  Please feel free to copy and pass on to anyone who might be interested.

After discussions between the Senior Club Committee Members and the Trustees, it has been decided that under the current Covid-19 restrictions it would not be possible to hold the AGM this year, various alternatives have been discussed, such as restricted access, using technology, etc, but none were deemed feasible in the circumstances.  The accounts will still be audited however, and current members of the committee are being asked to consider carrying on with their current roles for the time being. If this situation changes, a notice will be sent out.

These are difficult times, and although not many will be visiting the Club on a regular basis, could  I also take the opportunity to remind members that we have a letter rack in the entrance, and to please put all letters, mail and messages in this rack.  I have discovered mail, (bills and receipts), sometimes weeks old left in many different places in the Club House, on tables, cupboards and on the bar.  I check the letter rack every time I am in the Club.  We will be moving the scoring books and sheets out of there soon.   Also, if you take a message, either on the Club Answer machine, or directly, please ensure the message gets to the intended person, or at least someone who can deal with it. Thanks

Please try and keep safe over the next few months and if anything changes at the Club, we will endeavour to inform everyone as soon as we can.

Kind Regards

Rick Hough

2020 Trentham News Autumn

Message from the Captain – 21st August 2020

Hi everyone,

During this unusual time it has become very apparent that many of our members have really missed bowls.  Thankfully, thanks to Andy, Jules and many others, we have been able to enjoy friendly weekend games following Covid guidelines.

Although we only have a couple of months left this season Bowls England have provided some information for us to use on social media etc to encourage friends and family to come along for a friendly roll up.

I have therefore included some posters to give you all some inspiration. I have posted this on my Facebook page and  will also put them out on WhatsApp.

As you may all be aware Saturday mornings were set aside for coaching sessions. This would be an ideal time to take advantage of our facilities and to introduce bowls to your friends. We have some woods in the top shed and mats and jacks are available in the foyer of the club. If you would like to bring along any friends or family members this equipment is available to use, ensuring everything is sanitised before and after use. The only stipulation is to ensure flat shoes are worn on the green.

We have an online booking system in place – if you would like to come along with friends please ensure you book a time on the top green. Just to ensure we can maintain social distancing.

This is your club please do feel that you can bring along friends etc to have a go.  We all love bowls and as a member said to me once:

“There are a lot of people out there that love bowls, they just don’t know it yet”

Best wishes to you all.

Shirley

Club Captain.
